Deputy Ralph Waller was struck and killed while on a traffic stop in Loxahatchee around 0900 hours. Corporal Luis Paez was also struck and killed. Deputy Dan Diaz was struck and left with severe injuries.
The officers were waiting for help with a disabled police motorcycle when a driver traveling eastbound switched lanes to pass a slower vehicle, overcompensated, and struck all three officers.
Corporal Paez and Deputy Waller were life-flighted to St. Mary’s Hospital, where they were pronounced deceased. Deputy Diaz later passed from his injuries four days later.
Deputy Waller served with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years.
