Police Officer Cooper Dawson passed to gunshot wounds received while pursuing a suspect who fled his traffic stop around 1940 hours.
Officer Dawson stopped a suspect who had multiple felony warrants on Pickett Street. The suspect fled the car on foot, and Officer Dawson pursued him. He was then ambushed by the suspect, who struck him multiple times in the leg and chest. He returned fire, wounding him.
Officer Dawson was transported to the hospital and then airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he passed the following morning. The suspect was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Officer Dawson served with the Greenville Police Department for over a year. He previously served with the Garland Police Department for seven years. He was a United States Army National Guard Veteran.
